SF Symbol comes apart on iOS15

Thanks for creating McKinley! I’m able to do a lot very quickly. I had made a custom SFSymbol once upon a time starting with square.and.arrow.up.on.square and all I want to do is put an arrow pointing down as well. When I had done this previously it worked fine - but on iOS15 it would “blow up” and become a black blob. I imported the stock SFSymbol - copied the arrow and rotated it 180 degrees. My first try was just overlapping the full downward arrow on top of the original upward one. I was sad to see that the blob happened too with the output of McKinley - maybe SFSymbols worked differently back then?

I next edited the path of the arrow I copied and trimmed it to only be the arrow head but in order to get the preview in the upper left corner to look correct I had to move the arrow head way down. That resulting SFSymbol still turned into a blob on iOS15 as well.

Maybe I have to keep using stock SFSymbols for iOS 15 support?

Oh big Thank You for 1- having the courage to tackle such a contentious problem, 2-Releasing with the minimum macOS at 15!

Hi!

iOS 15 shipped with SF Symbols version 3. McKinley targets SF Symbols version 6 for the most part, and they’re now up to version 8.

What I don’t currently know is where in the chain Apple’s workflow handles backwards compatibility. In the SF Symbols app, there’s a warning on export about the minimum version of SF Symbols any given symbol needs:

I believe Apple’s app derives that warning based on which features you use in your symbol. However, I couldn’t find how to tell which things were preventing it supporting an older version!

I have to say I haven’t done much of a deep dive into the older SF Symbols support with respect to McKinley. If it’s something you’re interested in, I could have an investigate and see what I can do?
