While duplicating files to make other styles (from fill to non-fill, for example), I noticed that for the non-filled version, the ‘Export as SF Symbol’ would keep suggesting van.fill as the default filename, even though the file is called van. The same happened on one that is called van.recycling, which also wants to save as van.fill initially instead.

It’s suggesting the name of the primary variant (i.e. the top icon in the sidebar).
When you first name a file, if you haven’t already named the primary variant, the primary variant gets set to your new filename. But if the primary variant already has a name, that doesn’t happen.
You can manually rename the primary variant, and then this will get suggested for export filenames.
BTW you could make a new variant for your filled van, and then have them both inside the same McKinley file.
